TitleMUSEUM DOCUMENT COLLECTION (PREVIOUSLY HELD BY MUSEUM)
Date1682 - 1987
DescriptionThis accumulation contains a mass of varied subject matter of equally diverse importance. The cataloguer has subjectively extracted those items which are similar to items listed in M1-M5. Important omissions are the complete lists of Title Deeds, maps, plans and papers concerned with building work and equipment (eg telephones) for which reference should be made to the Museum's own catalogue, a copy of which is at M6/129. The collection contains very many contemporary documents used in the course of banking eg bonds of indemnity, mortgages, security for advances, conveyances, orders for payment, stock receipts etc as well as items connected with lotteries managed by the Bank and domestic items of very minor interest. There are papers on the defence of the Bank against the Chartists, 1844, and the rate assessors, 1911-18.
Custodial HistoryBy the time the Archive was established in the 1970s, many records had already been transferred to the Bank's Museum. Records in the Museum have since been brought under control of the Archive but, rather than attempt to classify each in respect of its origin, it was thought safer to reflect their most recent ownership and the provenance attributed by the Museum. Some items are listed here but still held in the Museum strongrooms. They can be requested from the Museum, provided they are not on display.
